Most people will tell you if you’re going to create a Bible study habit, you should do it first thing in the morning. While it’s true you have the most willpower in the morning to begin and sustain a new habit, it’s not always the most convenient time depending on your life circumstances.
If you have small children that require your attention early in the morning, you have a job you have to get to early in the morning, or you simply don’t have the ability to focus first thing in the morning, this might not be the best time for you.
You can study the Bible any time of the day and it can be just as meaningful. Instead of tying your new habit to time, try tying this new habit to something pleasurable. Maybe it’s simply having a cup of coffee or tea while you read your Bible. If you choose the evening, maybe go with decaf!
Or maybe you enjoy sitting outside on your front porch swing…take your Bible and journal with you.
Maybe you really enjoy taking long walks or running. Listen to the Bible on your phone with an app like YouVersion app. I know for a lot of people who like to walk or run, this is a great time for them to pray. You’re away from the distractions at home or work, and because exercise can clear your mind, you can focus on God more easily.
The pleasurable activity that I’ve chosen to combine my Bible study time is drinking a cup of coffee or tea.
Lord, thank You for Your Word and thank You that we can enjoy spending time in Your Word at any time of the day. Help us to find what works for each of us individually to create that Bible study habit we so want to develop. Thank you that you have given us pleasures in this world that are good for us and bring us closer to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
What pleasurable activity do you do or could you do to help create a consistent Bible study habit?
