Commentaries
Blue Letter Bible (website) (app) My favorite commentators on this app are David Guzik, Chuck Smith, Matthew Henry, and Charles Spurgeon
Bible Hub (website) (app) I’m not as familiar with this one, so I can’t recommend anyone in particular, but I have heard enough good things about the app/website that I feel comfortable recommending it.
Exalting Christ in 1, 2, 3 John by Dr. Daniel Akin
1, 2, 3 John (Zondervan Exegetical Commentary New Testament Series) by Karen Jobes
The Letters of John: an Introduction and Commentary by John Stott
Be Real (1 John): Turning from hypocrisy to truth by Warren Wiersbe
If you want to buy one commentary, I think the Zondervan one will give you the most for your money. It’s exegetical, meaning it will give you a lot of important background and context information, but it also goes into applying the principles in your everyday life. If you’re new to reading commentaries, it may be overwhelming, in which case, I would recommend the one by Daniel Akin.
